If you don’t know how to get to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, here’s the best way to discover it on an adventure and cultural excursion, led by our native indigenous guides.

1

Day 1: Departure

The journey to the Gotsezhy Refuge, in the majestic Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, begins between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. from the hostel of the travelers

At around 9:45 a.m., you will arrive at the village of Guachaca, the starting point of the trek. There, an indigenous guide will share instructions and recommendations for the hike.

The journey to Gotsezhy (Wiwa Indigenous Village) takes approximately three hours, traveling along trails that cross peasant and indigenous territories.

Upon arrival at the Gotsezhy Refuge, you will be welcomed by the families who run it, who will be responsible for providing recommendations about the area. After refreshing yourself with a welcome drink, you will experience spiritual harmonization, where you will receive a cotton thread as a symbol of protection for the territory.

Afterwards, a short 10-minute walk will take you to the indigenous community of Gotsezhy, where you can learn about their way of life:

Traditional huts, a community school, and Wiwa families (children, adults, and elders) living in harmony with nature. This space is also known as the Gotsezhy Refuge, a place where culture and nature merge into a unique experience.

Back at the Gotsezhy Refuge, you will have time to rest, settle in, and share a delicious traditional dinner. Finally, you will spend the night in beds or hammocks, surrounded by the tranquility and silence of the Sierra Nevada.

2

Day 2

The day will begin with a local tea drink and a delicious breakfast, followed by a 1.3 km hike to the Guachaca River.

Back at the Gotsezhy Refuge, after enjoying the river, you will have the opportunity to change clothes and rest in the hammocks before moving on to lunch.

After lunch and a short break, the guide will invite you to participate in a talk and experience with the Wiwa women weavers of the community. During this meeting, an indigenous woman will share the ancestral art of weaving mochilas, explaining why this activity goes beyond craftsmanship: it is a way of transmitting thought, memory, and culture. During the activity, you will be able to observe the entire process, from spinning the yarn to the finished mochila, as well as learn about the different products available in their community stores.

The day will culminate with a talking circle, a space for reflection and spiritual connection with the Wiwa culture, reinforcing the experience lived at the Gotsezhy Refuge.

3

Day 3

The day begins early with a hearty breakfast at the Gotsezhy Refuge. Immediately afterwards, the indigenous guide will share a series of recommendations before setting off on the hike to Matuna Waterfall.

To get there, you take a 15-minute walk along nature trails surrounded by nature. Upon arrival, hikers are greeted by a majestic sight: Matuna Waterfall, a waterfall over 10 meters high that forms a crystal-clear lagoon, perfect for a refreshing swim.

At noon, we will return to the cabin, where travelers can have lunch and rest before getting ready for the return trip.

In the afternoon, we will begin our trek back to the village of Guachaca, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us on the final leg of our journey to the city of Santa Marta, arriving at approximately 5:00 p.m. This last leg of the journey will bring to a close an unforgettable experience at Refugio Gotsezhy, a place that combines nature, spirituality, and ancestral culture.
